How I escaped the Taliban and built a new life in the UK

Amir was evacuated from Kabul in August 2021 after being attacked by the Taliban for taking photos. Now he’s pursuing his love of art, film and photography in the UK.

My name is Amir Hussain Ibrahimi and I am from Afghanistan.

I was evacuated on 25 August 2021 because my homeland fell to the Taliban after 20 years of freedom. Now I am in the UK and I start my new life with lots of challenges. Language, culture and much more.

My move to the UK was the start of learning more about myself, the new country and the new culture of the place that I now live in. There are lots of challenges ahead of me, yet I know I need to start from somewhere. And to me this starting point is community 🧡

I joined the Stage Door programme with Good Chance, and helped them produce the amazing Fly With Me festival. It was a huge hope to see Afghan culture celebrated in the UK.

Good Chance is more than a community, for me. Through Stage Door I have found a brilliant family where everyone is excited to learn and share. This is my first job experience in the UK after leaving my country and everything behind. I have learnt so much about teamwork and communication, networking and creating hope through art.

I find myself, I find hope at Good Chance. All my memories here are beautiful.

We were so lucky to find Amir last year through our Stage Door programme! A part-time, flexible work opportunity for young people (aged 17-24) from refugee backgrounds. Find out more about the programme and current opportunities here.
