The Jungle in Isanbul

For all lovers of our award-winning play The Jungle, and to all our friends in Turkey! We staged a rehearsed reading in Turkish at DasDas Open Stage in Istanbul on Wednesday 29th November, as part of the New Text Theater Festival with Galata Perform.

Our time in Istanbul started with a workshop on devised theatre by Good Chance Artistic Associate Ammar Haj Ahmad at Kadir Has University with over 60 artists, from which Ammar cast the reading itself and headed into rehearsals.

Directed by Ammar - who has played Safi, the narrator, in every single performance of the play produced by Good Chance to date - and translated by Ferdi Çetin, this very special performance of The Jungle was a vital opportunity for us to build bridges between Turkish, refugee and migrant communities in Istanbul, on and off stage, as well as between artists and audiences in Turkey and the UK.

Before the show we hosted a panel discussion with Co-Writer and Good Chance Co-Artistic Director Joe Robertson and Executive Director Naomi Webb to talk more about the context of the play and Good Chance’s work and the importance of reaching new audiences around the world with this vital story of community and HOPE.

From Calais to London, New York, San Francisco, Washington D.C., South Korea, Sri Lanka and now Istanbul, thank you ALL for following along the journey - this is just the start.

This rehearsed reading of The Jungle has been supported under the British Council's Creative Collaborations Grant Scheme.
