Lighting Designer
A Grain of Sand
Good Chance, creators of The Jungle, The Walk with Little Amal and Kyoto, are looking for a London-based Lighting Designer for the next chapter of A Grain of Sand by Elias Matar. We are looking for a Lighting Designer with strong touring experience to collaborate on a design for the show that is suitable for a small to mid-scale studio tour. We are particularly interested in designers who have a connection or draw inspiration from Palestinian and/or Middle Eastern cultures, incorporating these influences into their work, as well as designers who feel excited by working with shadows and texture. Projection is a key component of the piece, and we’re also looking for someone who feels confident working alongside video.
As well as developing and creating the Arcola Theatre and touring design, key aspects of the role will include:
programming in technical rehearsals at the Arcola Theatre,
attending production meetings,
providing all relevant technical information for the tour and liaising with the Touring Technical Stage Manager on practical matters relating to the subsequent tour.

About the show:
Renad, an 11-year-old Gazan girl, embarks on a dangerous journey. Carrying only the echoes of her grandmother’s tales and the spark of her own imagination, she searches for her family and the ‘Anqaa’ - the mythical Palestinian Phoenix.
Written and directed by Good Chance Deputy Artistic Director Elias Matar and brought to life by actor Sarah Agha, A Grain of Sand is a one-woman show that takes an intimate look at war through the eyes of a child, blending Palestinian and Gazan folklore with real-life verbatim testimonies from children in contemporary Gaza. It is a powerful and deeply humanising reminder of the resilience of children, their right to be protected and the vital role of storytelling in times of crisis.
Following a debut at the Barbican in 2024 as part of the London Palestine Film Festival, the show underwent a period of development culminating in a very successful and moving sold-out performance at the Unity Theatre as part of the Liverpool Arab Arts Festival in July 2025.
“A theatrical gut punch—honest, raw, and devastating.” - Liverpool Noise
The play includes themes of war, trauma and distress which some might find difficult to work with. If you have any questions, or would like to read the script in advance of applying, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
